New research is showing how effective forests are at mitigating the effects of extreme rainfall during severe weather events.

High resolution data collected from Mahurangi Forest near Auckland during the Auckland Anniversary weekend floods and Cyclone Gabrielle shows that nearly 60% of the rain that fell during those events was stored within the forest rather than flowing immediately across the ground and into waterways. NRC supports call for improved fuel resiliency

“It is vital there are sufficient stockholdings of diesel held onshore to assure our members that the supply chain can continue to operate,” says National Road Carriers Association (NRC) CEO, Justin Tighe-Umbers of the Government’s Fuel Industry (Improving Fuel Resilience) Amendment Bill.

The Bill aims to improve the resilience of New Zealand’s fuel supply by requiring at least 21 days’ supply of diesel onshore.
