Top technicians show their stuff

The 2024 National final of the New Zealand Hitachi Top Technician competition tested the skills of the top four technicians who reigned successful during the regional rounds of the competition. The regional rounds were held earlier in the year which saw 14 highly skilled technicians narrowed down to just four.

The four who were successful in securing their spot in the National final were Pieter Neethling and Terry Taylor, from CablePrice’s Auckland branch as well as two finalists representing the South - Kohu Whalon-Armistead of Nelson branch and Sam Langford of Christchurch branch.

The ultimate champions on the day, taking out joint first place and the title of New Zealand’s Hitachi Top Technicians were Pieter Neethling from Auckland and Sam Langford from Christchurch.

The competition was made up of a one hour closed-book theory test and an 80-minute practical, which involved inspecting the machine and identifying general servicing issues with a Hitachi excavator and providing recommendations. The competitors were also required to identify three faults with the machine during the practical segment, which consisted of an engine fault, a hydraulic fault and an electrical fault. Darren O’Connor, National Training Manager at CablePrice, compiled all the theory and practical questions and tasks for the day, ensuring a well-organised and successful competition.

Pieter and Sam will continue to represent CablePrice at the Oceania regional competition in Australia in early August. The winner of that competition will have the opportunity to put their skills to the test at the world finals, which will be held in Japan later in the year.
